Design & Character

A stunning example of Ercol's Old Colonial refectory table, Model 419, a rare and highly sought-after design from the company's most collectable range. The graceful trestle base with its beautifully sculpted supports creates that distinctive medieval-inspired silhouette, while the generous planked top provides ample dining space. Designed to comfortably seat six people, this piece showcases Lucian Ercolani's genius for combining traditional English furniture forms with mid-century modern sensibility. The dark elm finish gives it a richer, more dramatic presence than the classic blonde Ercol aesthetic, these darker pieces are considerably rarer and command a premium.

Materials & Craftsmanship

Crafted in solid elm throughout with Ercol's signature dark finish that highlights the wood's gorgeous grain patterns. The tabletop has been carefully revarnished, bringing out the depth and lustre of the elm while protecting it for years to come. The turned and shaped supports demonstrate the steam-bending and woodworking mastery Ercol was renowned for, while the planked top shows off the natural character of the timber. The traditional stretcher construction ensures rock-solid stability – this table was built to last generations. The Old Colonial range represents an earlier era of Ercol production and is particularly prized by collectors.

Versatility & Function

Perfect for family dinners, dinner parties, or as a statement piece in a dining room or kitchen. At 183cm long, it comfortably seats six people with room to spare – ideal for gatherings without overwhelming smaller dining spaces. The trestle base design means maximum leg room for diners, and the open framework keeps the visual weight surprisingly light despite the table's solid construction. The dark finish makes it incredibly versatile, equally at home in traditional interiors or providing rich contrast in contemporary spaces.

The base shows some age-related marks and minor wear consistent with its years, adding to the authentic vintage character. Structurally excellent and completely solid – ready for many more years of service.

About Ercol Old Colonial

Ercol was founded in 1920 by Italian-born Lucian Ercolani, who brought European craftsmanship to Buckinghamshire. The Old Colonial range, produced in the 1960s with the distinctive blue label, represents an earlier and rarer design than later Ercol tables. Model 419 is the classic Old Colonial refectory table, designed to be both practical and elegant. The dark elm finish was less common than the signature blonde aesthetic, making these pieces particularly collectable today. Using traditional techniques and locally sourced elm, Ercol created furniture that was both beautiful and built to last. Vintage Ercol pieces from the Old Colonial range are highly sought-after and command premium prices.

Extract taken from the Ercol website:

'Ercol was established in 1920 by Italian designer Lucian R Ercolani in High Wycombe, the centre of English furniture making.

He was intent on designing and producing relevant and honest furniture, design and people were the cornerstones of his company from the very beginning. This remains true of the company today, it remains family-owned with Lucian’s grandson and great-grandson both in the business to continue his beliefs today.

Design has always been at the heart of Ercol. Our designs constantly evolve to reflect how we live today. We have a talented In-house design team and furniture technicians, to create and develop our furniture designs, we also collaborate with external UK designers to create unique pieces all of which are made with integrity and fit for purpose.'
